I run a small home-based consulting business and I'm tired of my home address showing up on state business registries. I've been comparing registered agent services and Northwest Registered Agent keeps coming up because they advertise using their address for the business filing. Does anyone have actual experience with them for privacy? I'm not looking for legal advice, just trying to figure out if it's really as private as it sounds or if there are hidden tradeoffs.
Northwest Registered Agent seems like a better fit for keeping my address private
I used them for my LLC about two years ago. The address privacy part works, but you need to understand it's not total anonymity. Your name is still on the filing in most states.
How much do they charge? I looked at their site but the pricing felt buried.
I think I paid around $125 upfront and then it's $125 a year. That includes the registered agent service and they let you use their address on the formation documents. But definitely confirm current pricing, I signed up a while back.
The main thing that stopped me was that their address becomes your business address on public records. So if a client googles you, they see Northwest's address, not yours. For some people that looks less professional than a home address. Depends on your industry.
I've been with them for a few years and no compaints. Mail forwarding is included which a lot of the cheaper services charge extra for. Privacy has held up fine.
Do you actually get a real person when you call? That matters to me more than the address thing.
Yeah, that's honestly their best feature. I've called twice and got a human who knew what they were talking about. Not a call center script.
One thing to watch: if you're in a state that requires a physical in-state address for the registered agent, make sure Northwest actually has a presence there. They cover most states but check yours specifically beforee you commit.
I went withh a different service because Northwest's address shows up as the principal office too, and I wanted my actual office listed separately. You can sometimes list a different principal address but it depends on the state form.
That's a good point. In my state the principal office and the registered agent address are separate fields, so I kept my home address off the public record entirely. But I've heard in some states they auto-fill the same address for both.
So the privacy really depends on how the state form is structured.
Right. And on whether you're forming a new entity or changing an existing one. Changing the registered agent on an existing LLC is usually a simple form, but some states charge a fee and it can take a few weeks to process.
Anyone know if they handle the annual report reminders? I always forget those.
They send reminders, yes. Not sure if they file it for you or just remind you, but I've gotten emails before the deadline each year.
They remind you but you still have to file it yourself unless you pay for their compliance service. At least that was my experience.
