I started an LLC last year called "Ironclad Ventures" because I thought it sounded strong and professional. But my business is actually a mobile pet grooming service. Now I'm getting calls from people asking if we do construction or invest in startups. It's getting awkward and I'm worried it's hurting my credibility. Has anyone else dealt with a totally mismatched LLC name? Should I just rebrand?
My LLC name sounds completely different from what the business actually does
Ha! Ironclad Ventures sounds like a hedge fund. I'd be confused too. Honestly, just rebrand. A name that actually says 'pet grooming' will save you a ton of explanation.
You could lean into it. "Ironclad Ventures: We groom pets with an iron fist... of love." Might get you on local news.
Rebranding an LLC isn't as hard as you think. You file an amendment with your state, update your EIN if needed, and change your bank accounts. The bigger cost is marketing materials. But if the name is actively confusing customers, it's worth it.
Wait, you're a pet groomer? I might actually need you. What area are you in?
See? Even here people don't know what you do. Point proven.
I named my LLC "Apex Synergies" and I sell handmade candles. I feel your pain. I've just accepted the confusion at this point.
Apex Synergies for candles is even worse. At least Ironclad Ventures could be a gym for pets?
Before you rebrand, check if the new name is available in your state and whether the domain is taken. Also, consider a DBA (doing business as) instead of changing the LLC. You can keep Ironclad Ventures legal ly but operate as "Ironclad Pet Grooming." Cheaper and faster.
DBA is a solid suggestion. I did that for my side business. Just make sure your insurance and contracts reflect the DBA name too.
Still waiting to know if you're in my area. My golden retriever is a mess.
Maybe we should start a support group for badly named LLCs. "Ironclad Candles and Grooming"?
One more more thing: if you rebrand, update your Google Business Profile and Yelp right away. Old names linger in search results for months.
Or just embrace the chaos. Put a picture of a dog in a tiny business suit on your van. People will get it.
