LLC Filing

My Florida LLC was formed, but the county wants additional paperwork

Filed the articles with the state last month, got the approval. Now I get a letter from the county saying they need a separate form and fee. Is this normal? Nobody mentioned county filing when I set it up.

Depends on the county. Some of the bigger ones require a local business tax receipt before you can operate. It's separate from the state LLC filing.

What county?

dusty_trailblazer

Orange. Should have said that up front, my bad.

Orange County requires a business tax receipt application. Its not the same as the state registration. You usually need to provide your EIN and the state filing confirmation. Also be aware they might ask about zoning approval if you're running it from a home address.

Yeah that's just local. State registration doesn't cover county-level stuff.

I went through somethin similar a few years ago. It was mostly a form and a small fee. Nothing too complicated, just annoying because I assumed I was done after the state filing.

granite_whistle

The county letter usually spells out exactly what they want. If it mentions a business tax receipt, that's pretty standard for Orange. The fee is typically based on the number of employees and the type of business.

It does say business tax receipt. I just wanted to make sure this wasn't some scam letter or optional thing.

Call the county tax collector's office directly to confirm the fee amount. Some of the online services charge extra to file it for you. You can do it yourself.

pixel_pine

Not optional if you're doing business there. I'd just fill it out and send it in.

Also check if they require a separate fire inspection or something for your business type. Some categories do. But for most home-based or small retail it's straightforward.

Mine took about two weeks to process after I malied it in. No issues.

One other thing, keep the receipt visible if you have a physical location. They can fine you if you donn't have it posted. That's probably further down the road for you but worth knowing.

And renewals are annual, not one-time. I think a lot of people miss that after the first year.

dusty_trailblazer

Good to know about the renewal. Thanks everyone, I'll call the county tomorrow and get it sorted.
