I work remotely and have no idea which business address to use

So I run a small consulting biz from my apartment, and I need to put a business address on invoices and my website. But I don't want my home address out there. What do other remote folks do? I've heard of virtual offices and PO boxes, but not sure what's best. Also, can I just use my apartment address and not worry? I'm in the US if that matters.

Virtual office is your best bet. I use one for my LLC and it looks professional. Costs like like $30/month. PO box is cheaper but some clients might side-eye it.

SarcasticSquirrel

Just use your home address. What's the worst that could happen? Besides stalkers and spam, I mean.

MellowMoose

I've been using a PO box for years. Works fine for my freelance graphic design. But I don't have a physical storefront, so maybe it's different for consulting.

GrumpyOwl

Actually, for consulting, image matters. A virtual office with a real street address (not just a box) might be worth it. Some even offer meeting room access if you need to meet clients.

Thanks for the replies. I should add: I'm a sole proprietor, not an LLC. Does that change anything? Also, do virtual offices handle mail forwarding?

TechTurtle

Sole prop here too. I use a UPS store mailbox. They give you a real street address (not PO box) and can forward mail. It's like $20/month. Been working great.

SarcasticSquirrel

Wait, UPS store gives you a street address? I thought it was just a box. That might be a game changer.

MellowMoose

Yeah, some do. But check with your state's business registration rules. Some states require a physical address for your registered agent, and a mailbox might not cut it. For a sole prop, though, maybe less strict.

GrumpyOwl

Also, if you use a virtual office, make sure they allow mail scanning or forwarding. I had one that charged per piece of mail, which added up fast.

PixelatedPineapple

Good point about the mail scanning. I'll look into that. Any recommendations for virtual office providers that don't break the bank?

TechTurtle

I've heard good things about Opus and Regus but they can be pricey. For budget, maybe check local coworking spaces—some offer business address service.

SarcasticSquirrel

Or just use your home address and get a PO box for mail. That's what I do. Nobody's stalked me yet. *knocks on wood*

MellowMoose

One more thing: if you use a virtual office, check if they allow your business name to be listed on the directory. Some clients might Google the adderss and see a bunch of other companies there. Could look sketchy.

GrumpyOwl

That's a good point. But for a small consulting biz, maybe not a big deal. I've never had a client question it.

PixelatedPineapple

Thanks everyone. I think I'll try a local coworking space first and see if they offer a business address. If not, maybe UPS store. Appreciate the help!

SarcasticSquirrel

Let us know how it goes. And if you get any stalkers, at least they'll have a nice coworking space to visit.
