I found my preferred LLC name on Google but not in state records

So I've been brainstorming LLC names for my handyman side hustle. Found a great one, "Cedar & Stone Home Services", and it's all over Google, but when I search the state's business registry, nothing comes up. Is this a trap? Can I just file it? I don't want to step on some unregistered ghost's toes. Any idea why something would show up on Google but not the official records?

Google indexes old web pages, social media, blog posts—not necessarily active businesses. Could be a defunct site, a former name, or even a placeholder page someone made years ago and never filed anything.

Also, searching 'Cedar & Stone' might pull up a business in another state. State registry only shows in-state entities. Check the USPTO too if you care about trademarks, but for an LLC it's mostly about your own state's database.

Not a trap, but don't get lazy. File the paperwork, then you own the name in your state. The internet is full of ghost listings. I once saw a plumber's site from 2009 that was still indexed but the guy retired in 2015.

Solid name though. Very 'we will fix your fence and also sjell you a candle.'

Lol KettleCorn, that's exactly the vibe. But seriously, OP, just make sure it's not trademarked. A quick USPTO search is free. If no one's using it in your industry, you're probably fine. State registration is the main thing for an LLC.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but if it's on Google and not in the state records, could be a scam? Like someone pre-registering names to sell later? Probably not, but I've seen weird stuff with domain squatters. Anyway, good luck with the side hustle.

Domain squatters are a different beast. But yeah—if a domain is taken, you might want a different name anyway unless you want to pay up. Check .com and your state's .gov registry before you get too attached.

Also, "Cedar & Stone" is a bit generic. Might not be unique enough for a trademark, but for an LLC it's fine. Just don't expect to stop others from using similar names. And OP—file the articles, then start a Google listing yourself. Be the ghost.
