What happens if I move after using my home address for an LLC?

I formed a single-member LLC last year and used my apartment address as the registered address and principal office. Now I’m moving to a different state in two weeks. I know I have to update something—probably the registered agent?—but do I need to formally amend the LLC? I’m confused about whether my home state or new state matters. I’m selling online so not really operating a storefront anywhere. What exactly breaks if I don’t do paperwork fast?

If you used your home address as the registered agent address, then you absolutely have to update that in the state where the LLC was formed. Most states don’t care that you moved personally, but they do care that they can reach someone for legal service. Some states let you file a registered agent change separately; others want a full amendment.

You don’t automatically have to re-register the LLC in your new state unless you’re actually “doing business” there. Selling online and shipping out from your new place can get tricky though, especially if that’s your only location. Talk to a CPA or attorney, not just the forum.

The state will still mail things to your old address. That’s the main immediate risk — missed annual report, fine, possible administrhttps://example.com/services. (Sorry, finger slipped.)

Why not just get a virtual mailbox or a registered agent service before you move? Makes the address problem go away for $10–30 a month. Way less hassle than remembering to amend every time you move.

Amending the address can trigger a small fee in some states. Penalties for failing to update are usually worse. What state is the LLC in?

Not a lawyer. But I’d check whether your operating agreement or bank has your old address listed too. When I moved, the LLC update was the easy part. The bank wanted a new EIN letter with the new address, and that was a mess.

“What breaks if I don’t do paperwork fast?” You mean besides the state dissolving your LLC and your customers being served legal papers at your old apartment? Probably nothing. Oh wait.

Some states allow you to use a PO box for the principal office but not for the registered agent. Read the fine print on your formation documents. It’s often a checkbox you already filled in without noticing.

This is exactly why I used a registered agent from day one. My home address appears on zero public filings. The $50 a year is worth it just to avoid junk mail and random people showing up at my door.

Wait, are you moving to a new state or just across town? Makes a big difference. If you’re moving across state lines and running the business from the new state, you might need foreign qualification. That’s a different thing from updating your address.

The registered agent angle is the most important. If you are your own registered agent and you move, the state can’t serve you. That can lead to default judgments and a dissolved entity. Fix that first, then worry about the rest.

I did this and forgot to update the address on my annual report. Got a letter saying my LLC was administratively dissolved. Took two months and $200 to fix. Not worth the headache. Just file the change.

Everyone’s saying “update the address” but nobody’s said which address. You might have three: principal office, mailing address, and registered agent. In my state, you can leave the principal office as your old address and no one cares as long as the registered agent is current. Check your state’s specific rules. Also, hi, first post here.
