Just filed my LLC through the state's online portal. No lawyer, no service, just me and a credit card. Took about 35 minutes and $125. I kept waiting for a catch but it never came. Am I missing something? The PDF certificate already came through.
The state website was enough to get my LLC registered
Nope, that's genuinely it for formation. The catch is usually what comes after — annual reports, registered agent requirements, and whether your state actually cares. Which state?
the catch is that now you have to run a business. good luck lol
Colorado. I did see the annual report thing pop up, looks like $25 and not due until next year.
I did mine through a service and honestly regret it. Paid like $300 for them to type the same info into the same website. You did it right.
Depends on the business type. Single member with no employees and simple revenue? Yeah the state form is fine. If you're taking on partners or investors the operating agreement and tax election are where the real money is, and a form doesn't write those for you.
wait people pay $300 for that? I'm in the wrong line of work
The statewide portal in my state felt like it was built in 2004 and still worked fine. Bureaucratic but functional. Honestly the worst part was the PDF looks like a fax.
One thing — double check your registered agent address is one you actually monitor. Mine was right on the form but I usde an old mailing address and missed a notice.
The fax-looking PDF is a universal experience then.
Appreciate the heads up on the registered agent. It's my home addres for now, so I'll definitely see anything that comes in. Might switch if I move.
Home address works until it doesn't. My old one ended up on a data broker site within a month of filing, which is a fun surprise if you weren't expecting it.
should've made the website my registered agent smh
