The bank wants a physical business address but I work from home

So I run a small Etsy shop selling digital planners and I just got a letter from my bank saying they need a 'physical business address' for my account. I work from my apartment. I don't have a separate office. Is a home address enough? Do I need to rent a mailbox? I'm worried they'll close my account over this. Anyone dealt with this?

Home address shoulld be fine. That's what I use. Unless your lease says no business activity, but the bank doesn't care about that.

A lot of banks just want a street address on file, not a PO box. So your apartment is probably acceptable. I'd double-check if they have any weird internal rule about 'commercial' vs 'residential' but usually it's fne.

My bank once demanded a utility bill in the business name. Like, good luck with that when you're a sole trader working from your kitchen table. I ended up sending a copy of my lease and a phone bill and they accepted it.

I use a virtual mailbox service. Gives me a real street address and they scan my mail. Costs about $10/month. Works for banks, Stripe, etc. Not a PO box so it looks legit. Might be overkill for you though.

Just write your home address. Banks are not the address police. I've been using mine for 6 years. Never had an issue.

Wait until they ask for a 'business license' for a digital download shop. That's always fun.

I'd be careful. Some business insurance won't cover you if you don't declare home use. But for the bank? They just want an address where they can send letters. I'd give them the apartment and not overthink it. If you're worried, get a virtual address. I use one for privacy anyway.

Also, if you do go the virtual mailbox route, make sure it's not a 'commercial maeil receiving agency' that the bank flags as a PO box equivalent. Some are fine, some aren't. Just ask the service if they're accepted by banks.

Honestly, I think the bank is just tickboxing for anti-money-laundering rules. They don't actually care if you're in a studio apartment. I told mine 'I work from home' and they said 'great' and that was it.

Thanks everyone. I'll try the home address first and see what they say. If they push back, I'll look into a virtual mailbox. Appreciate the quick replies!
