Our email campaign had terrible results and I don't know why

We sent out a campaign last week to our list of about 2,400 people. Open rate was 11%, click rate under 1%, and we got three whole sales. I thought the subject line was good, the offer was solid (20% off), and we segmented by past purchasers vs. non-purchasers. I don't know what went wrong. Has anyone dealt with this? I'm not a marketing person, I just run a small shop.

11% open rate isn't terrible for a small list, honestly. What was the subject line?

MidnightScone

It was "Don't miss out on 20% off!" — I went back and forth on it.

There it is. That subject line screams 'mass email' and probably landed in promotions or spam for half the list. Also, "Dont miss out" is vague enough that people scroll past. Try something specific to your shop shop, like the actual product name or a weird detail. People open weird specific stuff.

lol 3 sales from 2400. that's rough buddy. but yeah the subject line is doing you no favors. also when did you send it? tuesday 3pm is a dead zone for a lot of lists.

I'd look at deliverability before you blame the copy. Is your domain set up with SPF/DKIM/DMARC? If not, Gmail and Outlook might be filtering you straight to spam. That would tank opens regardless of what the subject line says.

MidnightScone

I honestly don't know what those acronyms mean. I use Mailchimp, does that handle it?

SoggyBottomBoys

Mailchimp will walk you through it but you still have to set it up on your domain.Worth checking — if you're on a free email like a personal Gmail address as the sender, that's a big red flag too.

PixelatedOwl

Also 2,400 people — how old is that list? If half of them haven't opened anything in a year, you're emailing dead weight and it drags your sender reputation down. Sometimes the fix is just pruning.

LumpyGravy

Seconding the list age thing. We cut our list by like 30% and open rates went up because we stoppedd hammering people who'd already tuned out.

ToastCrumb_99

Wait you segmented past purchasers vs non-purchasers but did you change the email for each? If both groups got the same generic 20% off blast, the segmentation didn't do anything. Past buyers probably need a different pitch than someone who's never bought.

MidnightScone

Okay yeah the emails were basically identical. That's on me. I think I assumed segmenting alone was enough. Lots to fix here, thanks everyone.

no shame in it. most of us learned this by setting money on fire first. report back in a month, curious if the subject line swap moves the needle
