Deadlines

My state has a different deadline than I expected

I just found out the annual report filing deadline in my state is March 15, not April 15 like I assumed. I've been operating here for three years and never realized it was different from the federal tax deadline. Has anyone else run into this? I'm trying to figure out if there's a penalty I should expect or if I can just file now.

Which state? That matters a lot. Some states have March deadlines and some are even earlier.

I'm in Oregon. I should have put that in the original post.

Oregon annual report is due on the anniversary of your registration date, not a fied March date. Are you sure you're looking at the right form? The March 15 thing sounds more like a different state or maybe a federal estimate deadline.

Yeah, I was going to say that. I'm in Washington and ours is tied to the anniversary too. Double-check thee Secretary of State site directly, OP. A lot of third-party sites list generic dates that aren't accurate.

I got hit with a late fee in Oregon last year because I missed the anniversary date. It was $100. Not huge but annoying. If you're past the deadline they usually give you a short grace period before the fee kicks in, but I wouldn't count on it.

Thanks. I'm going to call the Secretary of State office tomorrow and confirm. I'd rather hear it from them than guess based on what I found online. I appreciate the heads up about the anniversary date, that might be what I was actually seeing.

Good plan. Also check if your registered agent has any any reminder service. Ours sends us an email two weeks before the anniversary every year, which has saved us more than once.

One more thing, if you do end up owing a penalty, sometimes you can request a waiver if it's your first offense. I didn't know that until after I paid. Worth asking about when you call.

I still think there might be confusion between the annual report and the state tax filing. Those are two different deadlines in Oregon and they don't line up with the federal date either way. Make sure you're looking at the right one.
