side hustle

My side hustle is growing faster than my full-time job

So I started a little weekend thing making custom phone cases on a Cricut about 18 months ago. Last month it made $4,200 after expenses. My day job pays $4,800 a month take-home. I'm not quitting tomorrow but I'm starting to feel like the tail is wagging the dog. Anyone been here? How did you decide when to jump?

rusty_nailgun

That's a great problem to have. What's your hourly on the side hustle though? $4,200 sounds great until you divide it by 80 hours a month.

Honestly, don't quit. Not yet. I did the same thing with resin crafts and the month I quit was the month Etsy changed their fees. Now I'm back at tbe dentist office part-time and I hate it. Keep the steady check until the side gig survives a bad quarter.

^^this is the answer. also look at your health insurance. that's the real trap.

I mean, congrats? But $4,200 on phone cases is suspiciously good. Are you selling locally or online? Because if it's all one marketplace you don't have a business, you have a landlord.

Second reply but I want to push back on myself — if youre actually making $4k after expenses and it's growing, that's not nothing. The hourly argument only matters if you're trading tifme for money forever. If you can raise prices or hire out, the math changes. What's your margin per case?

My buddy quit his job for a side hustle exactly like this. Two years later he's back in accounting and he says the worst part was the gap in his resume. Not saying don't do it, just have a story ready.

FernGully_88

Sable_Whisper that gap thing is real. Also nobody tells you that when it's your only income, the fun part dies a little. I used to love the resin stuff. Now I sell phone cases and dream about sticking beads in my eye.

jellybean_jim

lol at 'you have a landlord'

TepidChalupa

I stand by it. OP, seriously though: how diversified are your sales channels? That's the only question that that matters.

Different take — keep the day job and put the side hustle money into a fund for a year. If it's still growing after 12 months and you've got 6 months of expenses banked, then talk about jumping. Otherwise you're just gambling with a good streak

rusty_nailgun

we're all giving advice and OP hasn't said a word since the first post lmao

FernGully_88

classic. anyway if you can't answer how diversified your channels are, don't quit. that's my final answer.

jellybean_jim

cricut phone cases. you should pivot to dog bandanas. trust me.
