Remote Management

My Miami business partner lives abroad and wants to manage the company remotely

My business partner and I started a small home goods shop in Miami. He moved to Portugal last year for family reasons but wants to keep managing things remotely. We've been using email and the occasional Zoom, but it's getting messy. He wants to stay involved in daily operations, inventory, hiring, all of it. I'm worried about control and efficiency. Anyone dealt with a partner managing from another country? How do you make it work without stepping on each other's toes?

Remote management can work if you define roles clearly. Who has final say on what? Put it in writing.

Ha, good luck. My cousin tried that and ended up doing everything while his partner 'managed' from a beach in Bali. It lasted three months.

We use a shared Google Sheet for inventory and a Slack channel for updates. It's not perfect but keeps everyone in the loop. Maybe try something simple like that first?

What's his time zone? That's the real killer. If he's 5 hours ahead, decisions get delayed. You need to agree on a window for live calls and otherwise use async communication.

Is he actually going to do the work or just send ideas? That's the question. Remote partners often become 'idea guys' while you do the grunt work. Have a frank talk about expectations and maybe a trial period.

Tools won't fix a trust issue. If you don't trust him to make decisions from afar, no app will help. Consider giving him a specific area, like finance or marketing, and let him own it fully.

Brickell_Bob's story is classic. But it can work if both parties are committed. We use Trello for tasks and have a weekly video call. Been two years and going strong. Key is to not micromanage.

You need a partnership agreement that covers remote management. What happens if he stops responding? What if he disagrees with a local decision? Get it in writing. Not legal advice, just common sense.

Local305

Honestly, if he's abroad, he can't really manage day-to-day. You need a local person to handle emergencies. Maybe hire a shift lead and have him focus on strategy. Remote roesn't mean hands-off.

NightOwl

I agree with Local305. Remote partner can do big-picture stuff, but someone on-site needs authority. Otherwise you're jsut a middleman.

TropicalTide

All these suggestions are great but what's your budget? A lot of these tools cost money. If it's a small shop, maybe just use free versions and a lot of texting. Don't overcomplicate it.

SpongeBob

Why did he move to Portugal? Maybe he's not that into the business anymore. Just saying, actions speak louder than Zoom calls.

MangoSalsa

SpongeBob has a point. But maybe he had no choice. Have a honest conversation about his commitment level. If he's just holding on for the money, it might be time to buy him out.
