My Chicago business license application is taking longer than expected

I submitted my business license application for a small retail shop in Chicago about 4 months ago. The city's online portal still shows 'under review' with no updates. I've called 311 twice and got told to wait. Is anyone else experiencing this? I'm burning through savings on rent for a space I can't even use yet.

4 months? That's rough. What type type of license? Some of them like food or liquor take way longer than standard retail.

WindyCityWorrier

It's just a standard business license for a small clothing boutique. No food, no alcohol. I thought it would be quicker.

I applied for a general business license last year and it took almost 5 months. The portal is useless. Have you tried emailing your alderman's office? That's what finally got mine moving.

Alderman is a good call. Also, check if there are any zoning issues. Sometimes they stall on licensing because of a zoning hold they haven't told you about.

WindyCityWorrier

Thanks. I didn't think about zoning. I'll look into that. And I'll try the alderman's office tomorrow.

Yeah, zoning can be a hidden blocker. Also, are you sure your application is complete? Sometimes they request additional info but the notification gets lost.

That happened to me. They needed a copy of my lease and I never got the email. Check your spam folder and the portal's message center if there is one.

Have you gone in person to the business affairs office? I know its a pain but sometimes face-to-face gets results faster than calls.

I second going in person. Bring all your paperwork. Also, ask for a receipt or a case number if they give you one.

WindyCityWorrier

I'll try that. I'm worried about the rent though. My landlord is understanding but I cant pay for an empty storefront forever.

Hang in there. The city is slow but it's not usually a permanent no. Keep pushing.
