I run a small landscaping outfit and my business checking is with the same local bank I've used since I was 19. No real problems, but lately I've been thinking... what if they freeze my account or some glitch locks me out for a week? Payroll would bounce and I'd be toast. Anyone here keep a second business bank account just as a backup? Not looking to move everything, just want a safety net without paying a bunch of fees for an account that mostly sits there.
I'd feel better having a backup business bank account
Two accounts saved my butt when my main bank flagged a deposit as suspicious. Took them nine days to clear it. I transfer a small amount monthly to the backup and keep a debit card in my desk drawer. Fees are annoying but way cheaper than missing payroll.
How many employees? If it's just you, honestly a personal savings cushion works fine. But if you've got guys relying on a paycheck, a second business account is less optional.
I've got three. Not because I'm smart, because I keep forgetting to close the old ones.
lol that's the real tax of switching banks. five years later you're still getting statements from an account with $12 in it
Credit union is the easy answer here. Small business checking with a low balance requirement, and you can usually get a second account there. I keep a second one at a different CU so a single outage can't take both down. Important part: actually put SOME money in it. An account with $0 in it doesn't back anything up. I do a monthly transfer, same day as payroll, like a habit.
What happens when the backup bank decides your business is too small and closes the account? Happened to a buddy of mine. Feels like a false sense of security tbh.
Wait, banks do that? On a checking account?
They closed his because of "business model risk" or some consultant language. He had like no fees and kept five grand in it. You never know.
Different angle: the backup bank account won won't help if all your customers pay by ACH and they all stop at the same time. What actually protects payroll is a line of credit. Bank account is for daily ops, backup account is the seatbelt, credit line is the net.
Why not a line of credit AND the second account? You're not picking teams here, just costs money either way.
Cost of a second account is basically zero if you meet the minimum. Line of credi is real money. For a landscaper that sounds right. I run a small shop and got approved for a small SBA line after two years. Not painless, but it was a huge moment of peace.
my old boss had his main account locked for six weeks. six. weeks. due to a fraud false positive. 104 employees paid from his personal account. skip the fancy apps, call your bank and ask how fast they can unfreeze a business account.
Also just read the FDIC limits. Some people think a second account at the same bank counts as extra coverage. It doesn't. Two accounts at the same bank, joined at the hip.
100% to separate banks. I mvoed my backup to a small local institution and they actually pick up the phone. Feels weird how much of a reason that has become.
