I make small handmade desert-themed candles and want to start selling at weekend markets around Phoenix (Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, maybe downtown). I have zero market experience. What should I know before applying? Particularly unsure about booth fees, permits, and which markets are worth it.
I want to sell products at weekend markets around Phoenix
Permits depend on the city. Phoenix sometimes requires a transient vendor license if you you're selling at a city event. Ask the market organizer directly. They usually know exactly what's needed for their location.
Booth fees range a lot. I've seen $25 for a tiny church market and $300 for bigger Scottsdale events. Start with a cheap one to test your setup.
Candles in Phoenix summer. That's the hard part. Melted stock before noon is real. If you're doing June through September, invest in a cooler and shade.
The downtown downtown Phoenix farmers market has a decent handmade section but it's juried. Not sure they take candles, worth checking.
Application deadlines. I missed two markets because I assumed I cold apply the week before. Some are booked months out.
Also ask about insurance. Some venues want liability coverage, some don't. If you're making candles, fire risk questions can come up.
How many candles are you planning to bring? That affects your tablee setup more than most people expect. Too many looks cluttered.
Probably 60 to 80 sma ll ones to start. I hadn't thought about the clutter issue.
Table and canopy. Don't buy the cheap canopy, it will blow over at a windy market and you'll be chasing it across the lot. Weights on every leg.
Honestly the smaller neighborhood markets in Mesa were better for me starting out. Less competition, friendlier organizers, lower fees. Big events can be rough for new vendors.
What are you pricing them at? I see a lot of handmade candle vendors underpricing because they forget to count ther time and booth fees.
And And sales tax. You need a transaction privilege tax license in Arizona for most selling. Easy to forget.
The tax license thing is news to me. I'll look into that. Also leaning toward starting with ne of the smaller Mesa markets rather than Scottsdale.
