So I just filed my articles of organization directly on Sunbiz. Didn't use LegalZoom or any of those services. Cost me $125 instead of like $500 with a registered agent add-on. Now I'm second-guessing if I missed something obvious. Anyone else go the DIY route in FL?
I started my llc in florida without hiring a formation company
You saved money but now you're the registered agent unless you filed a change. That means your home address is public. Some people don't care, some do. I've been the RA for my own LLC for 3 years, no issues yet.
did you do the annual report? that's the one that gets people. due may 1st every year. miss it and the state dissolves you. ask me how i know 🙃
wait, annual report already? I literally filed last week. so that's due next year right?
Yeah you're good until next May. But set a calendar reminder now. The state doesn't send you a friendly text.
The RA thing is worth revisiting if you ever get sued. If you're your own RA and you're not actually at that address to receive service... could get messy. But for a simple LLC with no storefront, most people just roll the dice. I did for years.
Also did you get your EIN from the IRS? free, takes 10 min online. don't pay anyone for that.
lol the "formation companies" are mostly just charging you for clicking the same buttons on sunbiz. you did fine.
mostly agree, though the RA service has some value if you don't want your home address on the public record. depends on your situation.
Appreciate all this. Got the EIN already, set the annual report reminder. Might look into a cheap RA service later just for privacy. For now I'm calling it a win.
