I keep my business revenue private, even from friends

I run a small landscaping business and I've been pretty tight-lipped about how much I actually make. My friends are open about their salaries, but I just can't bring myself to share. It feels awkward when they ask, and I usually deflect. Anyone else do this? I feel like a weirdo.

Not weird at all. My wife's friends always ask about her job (she's a freelance designer) and she just says 'it pays the bills' and moves on.

I totally get it. I own a small bakery and I never tell friends my revenue. It's none none of their business. Plus, people get weird when they think you're doing well. Either they expect you to pick up the tab or they get jealous.

Why is it a big deal? If you're making bank, own it. If you're struggling, that's different. But hiding it just makes it seem like you're ashamed or something.

I think it's fine to keep it private. My brother-in-law is always asking about my business finances and it drives me nuts. I finally told him I'd share if he shared his salary first. He stopped asking.

OP, I'm with you. I run a small e-commerce store and I Never discuss numbers with friends. It's not about trust, it's just that money can change dynamics. I'd rather keep that separate.

Thanks everyone. PixelatedSoul, I see your point, but I'm not ashamed. I just don't want to deal with the fallout. TacoTuesday89, exactly! People assume you're loaded if you own a business and then they expect freebies or discounts. Ugh.

JalapeñoPopper

Wait, TacoTuesday89, you own a bakery? That's awesome. But yeah, I've seen that too. Some friends treat you like a ccharity case if you're struggling, or like a bank if you're doing well. Lose-lose.

PixelatedSoul

I guess I can see that. I'm just a straight shooter, but I get that not everyone is. Maybe it's a boundaries thing.

Also, some friends might get competitive. I had a frind who constantly compared our businesses and it got toxic. Keeping quiet saved the friendship.

QuietStorm

At the end of the day, it's your call. But I will say, if you ever need advice on business stufc, sometimes being open with a trusted friend can help. Just not with everyone.
