I found a free template but I'm unsure whether to use it

I've been looking for a way to update our studio's website without spending a lot. I came across a free template that looks nice, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. It's from a smaller site, and I can't tell if it's safe or if it will look okay once I add my own text and images. Has anyone used free templates? What should I check before committing?

Check the license first. Some free templates are only free for personal use. If this is for a business, you might need a commercial license.

How old is the template? If it hasn't been updated in a couple of years, it probably won't work well with current browsers or plugins. Also, look at the support forum or comments—if the creator never replies, that's a bad sign.

I've used free templates before and they can be fine. But you need to test it on mobile. A lot of them look great on a desktop and then fall apart on a phone.

I would just pay for a cheap template if I were you. Free ones often have hidden links or tracking code you can't remove. That can hurt your site's reputation.

Not always true. Some free templates are clean. You just have to inspect the code or use a tool to check for suspicious scripts. But that might be more work thna you want.

What platform is the template for? If it's for WordPress, make sure it's compatible with the latest version. Otherwise you'll get errors.

I agree with checking the license. Also, see if there are any reviews from other business owners. If it's only been used by hobbyists, it might not be robust enough.

One more thing: back up your site before you install anything. Even if the template is safe, you might break something while customizing.
