Just filed my LLC articles directly with the state website. Saved like $300 compared to those online services. Anyone else done it this way? I was nervous but it was actually pretty straightforward.

GrumpyPancake

Nice! I did the same last year. The hardest part was figuring out the state's fee schedule. Those formation companies are such a racket.

Wait until you get the annual report reminder. That's when the real fun begins.

KevinFromAccounting

Did you remember to get an EIN? You can get one free from the IRS website. Don't pay anyone for that either.

SilentOrbit

Yeah, got the EIN right after. Took 10 minutes. Good looking out though.

i used one of those $99 services because I was scared of messing up the paperwork. Now I feel dumb.

GrumpyPancake

Don't feel dumb, at least you got it done. Some people pay $500 For the 'premium' package and still mess up their registered agent.

CaffeinatedOwl

The state website was actually easier than I expected. But I did forget to check the box for the annual report and got a late fee. Oops.

llama_drama

CaffeinatedOwl, I did the exact same thing. That $50 late fee stung.

SilentOrbit

Note to self: set a calendar reminder for the annual report. Thanks for the heads up.

Also, if you're the only member, you might want to elect S-corp status eventually. But talfk to a CPA first, don't just take my word for it.

midnight_toaster

S-corp? I'm still trying to figure out what an operating agreement is supposed to look like.

GrumpyPancake

Operating agreement is just a fancy word for 'write down how you'll run the thing.' There are free templates online. Don't overthink it

CaffeinatedOwl

Or do overthink it if you have partners. Learned that the hard way.

llama_drama

This thread is making me realize i should probably just hire a CPA and stop guessing.
