Client Boundaries

I finally stood my ground with a difficult client

So I run a small design shop, and I have this client who has been a nightmare for months. Constant scope creep, endless revisions, paying late. Today they demanded a full redesign for free because they 'changed their mind.' I finally said no. Told them it's a new project with a new contract. They flipped out, called me unprofessional, threatened to leave a bad review. I held firm. Now I'm sitting here shaking but also weirdly proud? Anyone else been through this?

Good for you! That takes guts. I've been there. The shaking is normal—it's adrenaline. Give it a day and you'll feel like a boss.

Sounds like you did the right right thing. But be prepared for the bad review. Some clients think reviews are a weapon. You can respond professionally and it often backfires on them.

PixelatedOwl

Yeah, I'm bracing for the review. But honestly, at this point I'd rather have a bad review than keep working for free.

SassySquid

Wait, they wanted a full redesign for FREE? That's not a client, that's a hostage situation. You did the right thing. What did they say when you told them no?

PixelatedOwl

They said 'I guess our business relationship is over' and I just replied 'Okay, good luck.' Haven't heard back since. Part of me hopes they come crawling back with a new contract, but also good riddance.

readitandweep

Lol at 'good luck.' That's the perfect response. I need to take notes.

I had a client like that once. They demande a discount AFTER the work was done because they 'found it cheaper elsewhere.' I said no, they paid, but left a 1-star review. I responded with facts and it actually brought me more business. People can smell BS.

Honestly, this thread is inspiring. I have a client who is mildly difficult but not that bad. I'm taking mental notes.

Just remember to document everything. If they leave a bad review, you can often get it removed if it's false. But even if not, a calm response showing you were reasonable is best.

coffeeandchaos

Also, celebrate! You saved yourself hours of unpaid work. That's a win. Go treat yourself.

PixelatedOwl

Thanks all. I think I'll have a beer and try to relax. Appreciate the support.

SassySquid

One more thing: if they do leave a bad review, don't get into a back-and-forth. Just state your side once, and move on. Clients like that dig their own grave.

tinfoilhatguy

And save those emails! You never know. But hopefully it's over. Cheers!
