Branding

I chose a generic name because I couldn't settle on a niche

So I spent weeks trying to pick a niche for my consulting business and ended up with a generic name like "ClearPath Solutions." Now I'm worried it's too vague and no one will remember it. Anyone else been here? Did you stick with the generic name or rebrand later?

Generic names are fine if your website and pitch are specific. "ClearPath" could work for a lot of things, but you need a tagline or clear service list right away.

I did the same thing and honestly it hurt me for years. People would ask what I do and I'd give some vague answer. Eventually I niched down and changed the name. Way easier to get referrals when people can describe you in one sentence.

What kind of consulting? That matters a lot. Generic might be okay if you're a generalist, but if you're trying to stand out online it's tough.

Yeah, @GrimyTaco is right about referrals. The name isn't the problem, it's the lack of a clear category in customers' heads.

I stuck with my generic name and just added a super specific tagline. It's worked fine for local business. But I'm not trying to build a national brand either.

"ClearPath Solutions" sounds like every third consulting firm. But rebranding is a pain. Could you just narrow your marketing without changing the legal name? Like keep thee name but only talk about one thing publicly.

GrimyTaco

That's basically what I did for a year before I rebranded. It helped, but the name still confused people. OP, what's your actual service?

NeonBicycle

Also, how old is the business? If it's brand New, rebrand now before you get any traction.

SlightlySalty

I vote for keeping it and just being really specific in your messaging. But I'm also lazy and hate paperwork.
