I'm looking to start a small landscaping business in Lexington and keep hearing I should form an LLC. I have no idea where to begin. Do I need a lawyer? What's the actual filing process? Any help is appreciated.
How do i get started with an llc in kentucky?
You don't need a lawyer for a simple LLC. Go to the Kentucky Secretary of State website, search for business entity filing. It's like $40 to file articles of organization. Just make sure the name isn't taken.
What kyqwerty said. But also think about an operating agreement, even if it's just you. And get an EIN from the IRS, it's free and you'll need it for banking.
Thanks. I saw the SOS site but wasn't sure if that was all. Do I need to publish something in the newspaper? I remember hearing that for some states.
Kentucky doesn't require newspaper publication for LLCs. That's more of a thing in other states. Just file online and you're good.
Also check local requirements. Lexington might have a business license or zoning stuff. But for state level, SOS is it. I used a registered agent service because I didn't want my home address public. Costs about $50 a year.
RangerRick502, that's a good point about the address. Is that necessary? I work from home and don't love the idea of my address being out there.
You can use a registered agent service or a virtual offic. But you can also just use your own address if you don't mind. It's public record. Some people use a PO box but I think you need a physical address for the agent.
One more thing: after you file, you'll need to file an annual report with the SOS. It's due by June 30 every year. Don't forget or you'll get dissolved.
Appreciate all the info. I'll start with the SOS site and go from there. Thanks everyone.
