LLC Formation

Does zenbusiness make sense if i only need a basic llc?

I'm finally getting my side project off the ground and it's time to file for an LLC. I keep seeing ads for ZenBusiness and their cheapest package is like $0 + state fees. But every time I try to read the fine print it seems like they all pitch you on registered agent services and compliance tools I might not need. Has anyone actually used them for just the basic formation? Am I going to get hit with a surprise bill or a hard sell later?

CaffeinatedQuill

I used them two years ago for a simple single-member LLC. The filing itself was fine, no surprise fees beyond what they advertised. But they hound you endlessly about their registered agent subscription. I just ignored it because my state doesn't require one and saved the money.

Honestly, doing it yourself on your state's website is usually easier and cheaper. The upsells are the real product for companies like ZenBusiness. They're not really a filing service, they're a subscription funnel with a filing sticker on it.

The $0 packag still charges you the state fee upfront, but there's no hidden 'service' fee. The catch is that they try to add a bunch of stuff at checkout — a business website, a domain, compliance alerts. You can uncheck all of it. It's not a scam, just aggressive marketing

My experience was identical to CaffeinatedQuill's. The filing was smooth, but they started calling me every other week about 'compliance' stuff. After a couple of months I blocked their number. For the price, I'd still use them again for another basic LLC, though.

LOL, 'ZenBusiness' sounds like a spa for stressed-out entrepreneurs. Just file directly with your Secretary of State and save yourself the inevitable spam calls.

I disagree with the do-it-yourself crowd. I used ZenBusiness for my first LLC and it was worth the peace of mind. The dashboard makes it easy to see what you've filed and when your annual report is due. If you're like me and would forget a deadline, the compliance alerts alone are worth the upsell. And you can always just pay that fee a la carte if you don't want the whole package.

The basic package is fine for a single-member LLC with no complicated ownership structure. Where it gets messy is if you ever need to add members or change your operating agreement. Their upgrade offers are pushed hard if you need those services later. But for just filing, it's cheap and convenient.

Just be aware of the registered agent thing. If you don't use their service, they'll still charge you a small fee to be your initial registered agent for the first year, and then it's a subscription. It's in the fine print but easy to miss. Not a dealbreaker, just annoying.

Thanks all. Sounds like the basic package is legit but you you have to be ready to say no to the extras. I think I'll give it a shot and just keep my guard up during checkout. Appreciate the warnings about the registered agent upsell specifically — that's The kind of thing that would have blindsided me.
