Can LegalZoom register an LLC for a licensed home inspector?

I'm a licensed home inspector in NY and want to form an LLC for my business. I've used LegalZoom for other things but not sure if they handle the specific licensing requirements for home inspectors. Anyone know if they can do this correctly, or do I need a lawyer? Just don't want to mess up the paperwork.

LegalZoom will file the LLC articles for you, but they don't handle the home inspector license itself. That's separate through your state. The LLC formation is pretty standard, but double-check if NY requires the license to be in the LLC's name or yours.

I used them for my LLC a few years back. It was fine for the basic filing, but I had to get my inspector license on my own. They didn't offer any guidance on that part.

Not a lawyer, but I'd be careful. Some states require professional services to be set up as a PLLC or similar. Home inspection might fall under that. LegalZoom's basic package might not cover it.

I think it depends on the state. In mine, home inspectors can form a regular LLC. LegalZoom handled it, but I had to provide my license info separately to the state board. No issues.

They can file the LLC, but you'll still need to deal with the licensing board. I'd call LegalZoom and ask specifically if they support home inspector LLCs in NY. Their customer service might know.

From what I've seen, LegalZoom is fine for the LLC formation, but the licensing part is on you. Make sure the LLC name doesn't conflict with any rules. Also, you might need a registered agent.

Why not just use your own name as a sole proprietor? Less paperwork. But if you want the LLC, LegalZoom is cheap and easy. Just don't expect them to know inspection laws.

Actually, I recall that NY has specific requirements for home inspectors, and the LLC might need to be approved by the state. LegalZoom won't handle that approval. Better to consult a local attorney who knows the inspection industry.

Agree with PineTreeFrog. The LLC filing is one thing, but the license is another. I'd check with the NY Department of State or whoever regulates inspectors. They can tell you if an LLC is allowed and what steps to take.

I used LegalZoom and it was straightforward. But I'm in a different state. Maybe call them and ask if they have experience with NY home inspectors. They might have a specialized package.

One more thing: LegalZoom's registered agent service is an extra cost. You can be your own agent in NY, but you need a physical address. Just something to consider.

I'd also look into insurance requirements. LLC or not, you need liability insurance for inspections. LegalZoom won't help with that. But for the LLC itself, they're probably fine.

Has anyone actually used LegalZoom for a home inspection LLC in NY? I'm curious about the turnaround time and if they messed up anything. I'm considering them too.
