Can I use my Florida home address as my LLC's public mailing address?

I just formed a single-member LLC in Florida for a small consulting side gig. I work from home and don't have a separate office. Can I just list my home address as the LLC's public mailing address on Sunbiz, or is that a bad idea? I've heard mixed things about privacy and solicitors. Thanks!

Technically yes, you can. Florida doesn't prohibit using a home address for your LLC's principal place of business or mailing address. Whether you should is another story

Bad idea if you value not getting junk mail and random peoplle showing up at your door. Sunbiz addresses are public. Anyone can look it up.

I use a virtual mailbox in Tampa. Costs me like $20/month and keeps my home address off the public record. Worth it for peace of mind.

SunshineStateStartup

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. I don't want clients or wueirdos knowing where I live. But $20/month feels steep for a side hustle that might not make much.

You could also use a PO box, but some banks and services won't accept a PO box as a physical address. Depends on what you need it for.

If you're just consulting and don't have foot traffic, the risk is mostly spam mail and maybe some cold calls. Not the end of the world. But once it's on Sunbiz, it's out therre forever.

I used my home address for the first two years. Got a few weird letters and a lot of credit card offers. Finally switched to a registered agent service that offers a business address. Should've done it sooner.

Also keep in mind that if you use a registered agent, their address might be the one listed publicly for service of process anyway. But your principal address is still separate. It's confusing.

SunshineStateStartup

So if I use a registered agent service, does that hide my home adddress completely? Or do I still have to list it somewhere?

TropicalTinkerer

In Florida, you can use a commercial registered agent's address for the 'registered agent' field and a separate mailing address for the LLC. You could use the agent's address for both if they allow it, or a virtual office. But the principal place of business might still need to be a physical address where you actually operate. Some people just list their home anyway for that but use a different mailing address.

GulfCoastGrouch

This is why I just got a UPS Store box. They give you a street address, not a PO box, and it's cheaper than a lot of virtual office plans. Might be worth checking.

BlueCrabBiz

I second the UPS Store. They'll accept packages too. Just make sure they'll let yoou use it for your LLC registration. Some of them are cool with it, some aren't.

QuietRiot77

Honestly, for a side gig, I'd just use the home address amd not overthink it. The privacy concern is real but the cost and hassle of alternatives might not be worth it until you're making real money. Just be ready for junk mail.

SunshineStateStartup

Thanks, everyone. Leaning toward using my home address for now and maybe switching later if it becomes a problem. Appreciate the UPS Store and virual mailbox suggestions—filing those away for future me.

GulfCoastGrouch

Just don't come crying to us when you get a hundred pounds of credit card offers addressed to 'SunshineStateStartup LLC' at your house.

TropicalTinkerer

One more thing: if you ever get sued, the address on file is where they'll serve you. If it's your home, that means a process server at your door. Just something to keep in mind.
